Stones from other mountain 他山之石
SAK edition 2021
The edition title is: Stone from other mountain, 他山之石,可以攻玉 could be translated as: the other mountain’s stone can polish jade; to improve oneself by accepting criticism from outside. It is taken from 詩經Shijing (The book of odes) – I had a chance to visit the glass collection from Asia in the Östasiatiska museum in Stockholm. In the collection, I found some glass objects with unique pattern and colour that looks like precious stone. The researcher explained to me that for a long time glass has been a good material to mimic the quality of jade or other rare stones. Glass has always been a good material for learning things. In this Edition, I focus on using green glass to reproduce ”the rarest jade stone”, I also designed a 3D-printed unique “wooden stand” for each jade stone to stand on. When I make glass jade, I try many different kinds of green coloured glass that I’ve collected for years, some of them might even have been produced before I was born. I also layer different shades of colours on top of the green to create depth in the stone. The stand for expensive stone is often made out of rare dark wood, I chose to make it exclusive by actually sculpting the mini podium in a computer program myself, and 3D printing them out. I thought it would be fun to play with the contrast between materials and triggering the states of material with my thoughts and understanding of copying and authenticity. Glass has been a good material for me to learn things in this complicated world.
